In our infinite wisdom we booked a Snowmobiling and Ice Cave tour for the morning after our late night Northern Lights tour. Getting to bed at 3am and then having to get up for a 7:30 pick up was an interesting test of our ability to get ready and not forget anything while half asleep.

Since snowmobiling requires snow we had to get to Langjökull, the second largest glacier in Iceland, which was a couple of hours drive away North East of Reykjavik. The “minibus” we were picked up in was a souped up beast perched upon 4 massive wheels and equipped with some very nicely padded seats with wings to protect your head when bouncing around.

He was also really funny and gave a running commentary of where we were, and told (hopefully made up) stories of getting stuck on the glacier.

It was very impressive the way he knew where to weave through the rocks, ice and snow so that we wouldn't get stuck and would eventually arrive at a basecamp with 2 large wooden huts and a menagerie of snowmobiles waiting outside.

The first thing we needed to do was suit up in a bright orange warm jumpsuit, gloves, balaclava and helmet. I wish I wore the gloves I had brought with me because the ones they supplied were way too big for my tiny child hands. I assumed the bright orange was so it would be easier to find us if we got lost.

Ready on their snowmobile

Ben and I were the last to set off and within 30 seconds of moving we saw one of the guides crash spectacularly. This made us even more cautious than we already were since it looked like it hurt... a lot. We stopped to ask if she was OK, but she got up quickly and waved us on.

It was terrifying and I spent the majority of the trip to the ice cave screaming at Ben to slow down, not knowing that he couldn't hear a thing I was saying. When we got off, he told me he'd been driving slowly since he saw the instructor crash!

Our destination was an ice cave at the bottom of a steep hill, a rectangular hole in the ground was cut deep into the snow, wide enough for us to descend single file into the cave. It was hard getting down since the steps were made from compacted snow until near the bottom they were made of wood. The wood was worse as it was wet and slippy but we all made it down in one piece.

Japan considers baseball to be it's most popular national sport, even more popular than traditional sports like sumo wrestling. When we were in Hiroshima, we saw posters advertising the Hiroshima Carps everywhere, and even special manhole covers!

Hiroshima Carps manhole cover

Unfortunately the baseball season was pretty much over and so we couldn't catch a game in Hiroshima (even if we had the time); but then we learned that the first match of the first ever Asia Professional Baseball Championship was taking place while we were in Tokyo and we decided to get tickets for the Japan vs South Korea game.

Ticket Quest

In Japan, you can buy tickets for a huge number of sporting events or concerts at special ticket terminals which can be found in corner shops.

Our attempt at this was a barrel of laughs; we stood in a Lawsons corner shop for ages trying to find and buy the tickets on their ticket terminal. The trouble was that, of course, everything was in Japanese and we had no idea what we wanted to buy. There were so many different venues, and so many different events. We could have asked the shop assistant but Ben was convinced we wouldn't be able to explain what we wanted.

After being defeated we went back to our hotel and I did a lot more Googling and found the site to buy your tickets from Lawson online. This was a lot easier, since we could use Google Translate to translate the page, and so we successfully bought two tickets on the home supporters side. But to actually get the tickets, we would need to collect them from our old nemesis... the Lawson Ticket Terminal!

Off we went again, back to the ticket terminal. Luckily, redeeming a pre-bought ticket was a lot more straightforward!

We'd left DisneySea early and caught the underground trains back into Tokyo towards the Tokyo Dome stadium.

The Tokyo Dome is a massive air filled stadium, with an inflatable roof. The inside is kept at a slightly higher pressure than outside to keep the roof up. If the doors are held open (as they are at the end of the evening) there's a huge funnel of air blowing continously out of the doorways.

Of course, we had no idea what the words meant, but the tunes got stuck in our head and the whole stadium sang along.

Tokyo has two Disney parks: Tokyo Disneyland which follows the same Magic Kingdom layout as the other Disneylands around the world (and has most of the same rides) and Tokyo DisneySea which is unique to Tokyo.

We decided to skip the Magic Kingdom park and spend our two days at DisneySea.

DisneySea is built around many different 'ports of call' which are the different themed lands; from New York to the Arabian Coast, deep jungles of Lost River Delta to Ariel's Mermaid Lagoon, and in the centre is a large volcanic caldera from Jules Verne's Mysterious Island.

As you walk into the park, you find yourself in front of the large lake, with Mediterranean-style buildings to your left and right. Looking across the lake, we could see the volcano, which we headed around towards.

I did not plan these few days very well. After our mission to get to Hakone last night we worked out that we had to be up and out very early to catch an early morning bus if we wanted to be in Tokyo in time for Ben's Kintsugi class at 1pm.

While we were standing at the bus stop, Ben managed to nip down to the lakeside to take some photos before the bus arrived and we found a vending machine selling snacks to eat for breakfast.

He provided small cups with v-shaped chips on the edge to the students. Since it was a fairly expensive experience (gold!) we only paid for Ben to take part. I felt a little guilty being there too but Showzi and his wife were very welcoming and let me take photos of the process.

I had planned on visiting Tower Knives since the beginning but so far hadn't actually had the time to go. We had used some Osakan made knives in the Eat Osaka lesson and I wanted to purchase the same or similar to remind me of our travels when I cook.

The knife shop didn't open until 10am so we didn't have to rush to get there early - which was good because we were very slow. We had a nice breakfast at our Osaka hotel, and headed out.

Since we arrived later in the day and had no cash, we missed the last bus to our hotel whilst trying to find a cash machine to pay for it.

While waiting for Ben to talk to the Information desk and find an International cash machine, two Japanese ladies came and spoke to me using Google Translate. They wanted to know if I was enjoying my stay and if I would have dinner with them. After they found out we had to be somewhere they invited us to breakfast instead, which we also couldn't do. It was quite a strange conversation, but I think they were just very friendly.

Ben finally found a cash machine in a Seven Eleven around the corner and we had to take a taxi to the hotel instead. We finally arrived at the hotel after 9pm! Even though it was late, Ben took advantage of the spa and had a relaxing bath in the hot spring pools before bed. Not wanting to use the "public" baths, I stayed in the room and read a book in bed.

Breakfast in Osaka

At 10am we had an Osaka Walking Tour with Ichiro, the owner of All Star Osaka Tours. He kindly came and found us when we arrived at the station and got a bit lost. Arriving from the subway, we had a bit of a mix-up with which of the 'South' entrances we were meant to be meeting at. Osaka station had a choice of 'South', 'Upper South', and 'South-Central' entrances!

Our tour had 3 other people on it, all from California, although only 2 of them had actually come together.

Osaka station

The tour showed us the different levels of Osaka Station, including the Japanese gardens at the top and the posh department stores underground. We saw some large Pokemon Center signs and made a mental note to visit when we were back in Osaka.

We learnt about how the diagonal roof of Osaka station is only attached on one side! The other side is on rollers so it can move around slightly if there's an earthquake.

Ichiro taught us some local Osakan slang for 'Hello' and 'Thank you' which we then practiced on a waiting shopkeeper who gifted us origami cranes.

Shinsekai alleyways

Ichiro told us about statues of a figure called Billiken, who is the 'god of things as they ought to be' and is a very popular good-luck charm in Osaka. There are a lot of large golden coloured statues of him in the street and it is thought to be lucky to rub his feet. We found out later that he's not originally Japanese, but the Shinsekai district seemed to have adopted him as their symbol.

We also tried a lemonade that came in a old-fashioned-style glass bottle with a round ball in the top that you had to push in to release the pressure and be able to drink.

This meant we had missed the meeting place meet up, but luckily a guy was just locking up the Tower Knives shop and took us round the corner and down an alleyway to a small house equipped with a large table and 6 place settings.

It was time to check out from the lovely Toba International Hotel, but not before we devoured copious amounts of their delicious breakfast. We ate more of the same from the previous day, I had Brown Rice Flakes cereal, yoghurt, cinnamon buns and two slices of toast; unfortunately without the Black Cherry Jam. Ben wanted French Toast again but it wasn't on the menu today so he stuck with sausages, bacon, rice, croissants, a Japanese-style omelette, followed by 'breakfast desserts' of Pear Tart and a small cup of set custard.

We packed our bags and left them at the front desk while we continued to visit Toba. It was quite a wet day and we immediately regretted leaving our umbrella with the rest of the luggage.

The CanBus is the tourist bus, it travels between all the major tourist attractions in Toba & Ise.

Meoto Iwa

Meoto Iwa are two large rocks in the ocean that are wedded together with a long length of rope.

I wasn't a fan of either, especially as I expected it to be sweet; we didn't know it was lobster and were looking at strawberry crackers at the time.

We took the bus back to Toba, but instead of alighting at the station we carried on to Toba Aquarium.

I was slightly wary of going to an aquarium because sometimes the animals aren't cared for correctly but I read online that Toba Aquarium is instrumental in captive breeding of some very difficult and endangered sea creatures such as the dugong and the finless porpoise.

I had a really lovely time and it was a great idea to go because we were out of the rain. The aquarium is a very large building, that seems to be a hodge podge of rooms - except it seems like it was designed that way; probably to accomodate all the different sizes of tanks and enclosures.

Ise Jingu or Ise Grand Shrine is one of the most important sites for the Shinto religion, and it was definitely one of the busiest temples we visited. The whole shrine area covers a large section of forest and river, sprinkled with many smaller shrines.

To enter Ise Jingu, we crossed the wooden Uji bridge.

You may notice that there are two sets of steps and two plots of land, but only one shrine building. Every 20 years they burn down the whole temple in a big ceremony and completely rebuild the temple on the opposite side.

It wasn't possible to see into these temples, or even to see the buildings themselves! As such a holy place, the public is only allowed up to the fence and gate of the courtyard that surrounds them.
